The design
We extracted Hakuin’s striking character for “virtue” from a larger scroll to let the calligraphy stand on its own.
The bold, rhythmic strokes create a strong vertical composition with generous negative space, giving the print clarity and presence on fabric. This focused treatment highlights the energy of the brush while keeping the overall look minimal and modern. If you prefer the full text, a version with the complete inscription is also available.
The artist
Hakuin Ekaku (1686-1769) was a pivotal Rinzai Zen monk and one of Japan’s most influential Zen calligraphers. His works are known for directness, vigor, and spiritual immediacy.
