Sengai Gibon (1750–1837) was a Japanese Zen monk, artist, and abbot of Shōfuku-ji temple. He is best known for his playful and minimalist ink paintings, which often expressed Zen principles in simple, abstract forms. His works aimed to make Zen teachings accessible to a wider audience. The work shown here was painted in 1800 and called "The Universe".
