Torei's Daruma - T-Shirt

The design

The artwork likely depicts Daruma (Bodhidharma), who is revered as the founder of Zen Buddhism. While often shown deeply shrouded in his robe or showing a fierce expression to illustrate his determination and concentration, Tōrei Enji is giving the figure in his painting an aura of serenity. The thick, rugged outline reminds us of the technique known as hitofude daruma (or single-stroke Daruma) where the core of the figure is rendered one, or very few, in a sweeping brushstrokes, aiming to convey the essence of the Zen patriarch as directly as possilbe.

The artist

Tōrei Enji (1721-1792) was the primary Dharma heir of the legendary reformer Hakuin Ekaku and a pivotal figure in the history of Japanese Zen. His artwork is celebrated for its energy and spiritual depth.
