The design
Tesshū painted his "Talismanic Dragon" in bold, sweeping strokes meant to capture the living spirit of the dragon rather than a detailed likeness. In Zen and Japanese folk tradition, dragons are protective beings – symbols of vitality, courage, and spiritual force. Works like this were often used as talismanic images, believed to ward off evil influences and strengthen the spirit of the viewer or owner.
The artist
Yamaoka Tesshū (1836-1888) was a famous Japanese samurai, Zen practitioner, and master of both swordsmanship and calligraphy. He lived during the turbulent late Edo and early Meiji periods and is best remembered as the founder of the Itto Shōden Mutō-ryū school of kenjutsu (swordsmanship).
