This t-shirt features a minimalist yet profound ink painting of the poet Hitomaro by the celebrated Zen master Hakuin Ekaku.

The design

The artwork on this shirt depicts Kakinomoto no Hitomaro (662–709), Japan’s most revered poet of the Asuka period. In this Edo-period masterpiece, Hakuin utilizes the moji-e technique – a "picture made of writing." Except for the fine details of the face, Hitomaro’s form is composed entirely of the calligraphic script of his own famous poem: "Dim, dim! My thoughts are with a boat which travels island–hid in the morning–mist of the shore of Akashi." To the left, a poem plays on the names of the poet and the location, suggesting that while a destructive fire reached the "base of the persimmon tree" (Kakinomoto), it stopped when the name "Akashi" (meaning "light" or "dawn") was called. This composition represents a perfect harmony of Kakejiku (hanging scroll) aesthetics and Zen humor, transforming a traditional courtly figure into a dynamic, living flow of ink.

The artist

Hakuin Ekaku (1685-1768) was the most influential figure in Rinzai Zen Buddhism of the last five hundred years. Known for his "The Sound of One Hand" koan, Hakuin used his prolific output of painting and calligraphy – or Zenga – as a tool for teaching the dharma to both commoners and elites. His style broke away from the rigid, polished lines of professional artists in favor of bold, spontaneous, and expressive brushwork that prioritizes spiritual energy over mere technical perfection.

Why you'll love it

  • Authentic Zen Heritage: The design is a faithful reproduction of a museum–quality hanging scroll painting, ensuring the spiritual integrity of Hakuin's original brushwork remains intact.
  • Intellectual Fashion: More than just a graphic tee, this is a wearable conversation piece that blends 8th-century poetry with 18th-century avant-garde art.
  • Versatile Minimalist Style: The monochrome ink-on-paper aesthetic pairs effortlessly with contemporary street style or relaxed loungewear.
  • Ideal for Mindful Living: The breathable fabric and calming Zen imagery make it a perfect choice for meditation, gallery visits, or creative studio work.
  • A Gift with Meaning: A thoughtful and unique gift for practitioners of Zen, lovers of Japanese literature, or collectors of Ukiyo–e and traditional Asian art.
