A soft, mid-weight cotton tee featuring Utagawa Hiroshige’s “Meguro Taikobashi Yūhinooka” – commonly known as “The Drum Bridge and Sunset Hill in Meguro.” This edition is reproduced with care so the gradations, flowing river, and arched bridge read clearly on fabric. An easy daily shirt for anyone who appreciates Edo-period landscape prints – from quiet mornings to evening walks.
The design
Hiroshige’s composition centers on the taikobashi – a high, drum-shaped bridge – spanning the Meguro River with gentle S-curves that lead the eye through water, bank, and distant slope. Cherry trees frame the scene, while the sky is rendered with bokashi – the subtle color gradation characteristic of fine ukiyo-e – suggesting changing light over “Sunset Hill.” Different printings of this design are known with lighter palettes that feel like morning and darker impressions that read as dusk or night, a result of hand-inked color choices and wear in the woodblocks over time. On fabric, these contrasts give the landscape depth without shouting, making a calm, quietly elegant graphic.
The ukiyo-e print is set against a soft shadow gradient that highlights its outline, giving it a subtle floating effect. This effect isn’t visible on the black version of the shirt.
The artist
Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) was a reknowned ukiyo-e landscape master of the late Edo period. Best known for series such as “One Hundred Famous Views of Edo” and “The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō,” he distilled weather, season, and atmosphere into clear, lyrical designs. His treatment of perspective and color gradation influenced later Western artists – notably the Impressionists – and continues to shape how we picture historical Edo/Tokyo today.

How to care
How to care
In Japanese tradition, from the tea ceremony to martial arts, there exists a profound respect for the objects we carry and use. If you would like to provide good care for your new shirt, we suggest the following guidelines:
- Wash your garments inside-out to protect the print.
- Wash with similar colors to prevent discoloration.
- Use a mild detergent.
- Avoid the tumble-dryer – let it dry in the air.
Japanese Zen teaches us the impernanence (mujō) of all things. Your new shirt won't last forever. But if you care for it, it will thank you by aging gracefully.
