Shōki Black & White - T-Shirt

The design

Shōki – the talismanic demon-queller adopted from China’s Zhong Kui legend – is shown mid-strike against an oni (or demon). The composition follows ukiyo-e conventions: Bold, confident linework, billowing robes that carve strong diagonals, and the tense counter-pose of the demon. We isolate the figures for clarity, retaining Hokusai’s dramatic movement and facial intensity, then layer a light contemporary texture to give the print depth without distracting from the original brush logic. In Edo-period Japan, images of Shōki were displayed to guard households – especially boys – from illness and misfortune, and that protective association still resonates today.

The artist

Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) is among the most influential artists of the Edo period, known for his inventive draftsmanship and restless experimentation. Beyond “The Great Wave,” he produced numerous paintings and prints of legendary subjects.
