The artist

Hakuin Ekaku (1686-1769) was a Rinzai Zen reformer and one of Japan’s most influential monk-artists. Known for direct teaching and vigorous brushwork, he used calligraphy and brief texts to communicate Zen insights to a wide audience. His works balance spiritual instruction with strong visual rhythm – qualities that continue to resonate far beyond the temple.
