In Japanese art, inkan (印鑑) are personal seals – small carved stamps, often in stone, ivory, or wood – used to sign artwork, documents, or letters. Artists press them in red ink to mark ownership or authorship, much like a signature, often alongside calligraphy or a painting. Normally an inkan shows the artists name in Japanese kanji in a circular, oval or rectangular shape.
The inkan you see on this shirt are quite unusual; bordering on the rebellious. They were created by Kawanabe Kyōsai (1831-1889) a Japanese painter and illustrator known for his innovative art blending traditional ukiyo-e, folklore, and satire. He was also known to enjoy the occasional drink or two and can safely considered as something of an outlier in traditional Japanese arts. So it is only fitting that he is also taking a good amount of artistic freedom with his inkan seals.
