This ukiyo-e T-shirt brings to life the world of the legandary samurai Raikō, featuring a faithfully reproduced woodblock print from the Edo period. A wearable piece of Japanese art that balances historical significance with a clean, contemporary aesthetic – and a gripping background story.
The design
The artwork depicts the climax of the legend of Shuten-dōji, a demon of medieval Japan. In this dramatic composition, the legendary warrior Minamoto no Yorimitsu (also known as Raikō) leads his four loyal retainers into the demon’s lair. The scene captures the moment where Shuten-dōji sheds his human disguise, revealing a towering, monstrous form that spans across the original triple-panel woodblock. The artwork expertly uses scale to emphasize the bravery of the samurai, who appear small but resolute against the overwhelming presence of the demon.
Historically, this tale represents the triumph of order over chaos during the Heian period. Minamoto no Yorimitsu was a real historical figure, celebrated for his military service to the Fujiwara clan, but his legacy was immortalized through these supernatural tales. The design highlights the dōjigiri – the legendary sword used to behead the demon – which survives today as a National Treasure of Japan. The rich details in the warriors' armor and the chaotic energy of the transformation make this one of the most iconic examples of musha-e (warrior prints) in the ukiyo-e canon.
The artist
Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861) was a master of ukiyo-e and remains one of the most imaginative artists of the genre. While his contemporaries Hokusai and Hiroshige focused on serene landscapes, Kuniyoshi found his genius in the world of martial glory and mythic battles. His ability to compose complex, dynamic scenes with cinematic energy continues to influence modern manga and tattoo art today.

How to care
How to care
In Japanese tradition, from the tea ceremony to martial arts, there exists a profound respect for the objects we carry and use. If you would like to provide good care for your new shirt, we suggest the following guidelines:
- Wash your garments inside-out to protect the print.
- Wash with similar colors to prevent discoloration.
- Use a mild detergent.
- Avoid the tumble-dryer – let it dry in the air.
Japanese Zen teaches us the impernanence (mujō) of all things. Your new shirt won't last forever. But if you care for it, it will thank you by aging gracefully.
