The design
The artwork featured on this garment is titled "Profound Sincerity," originally a hanging scroll painted ca. 1780-90. The powerful calligraphy translates a phrase taken from the Sutra of Meditation on Amida Buddha (Kanmuryōju-kyō), a foundational Pure Land Buddhist text. Despite its textual origins, the visual execution is deeply rooted in the Zen tradition. The characters are brushed with vigorous, spontaneous energy.

The artist
Jiun Onkō (1718-1804) was a multifaceted scholar and monk born in Osaka, Japan. Although ordained in the Shingon sect, his spiritual curiosity led him to master Zen and Shinto teachings as well. He was a passionate reformist, deeply concerned with the moral laxity of the Buddhist clergy of his era. In his art, Jiun drew inspiration from the energetic works of past Zen masters, using his brush to convey a sense of moral urgency and spiritual clarity that still resonates today.
