Experience Zen art for your every day with this unique double-sided tee. Featuring the expressive ink work of Nakahara Nantenbō, this shirt utilizes both the front and back of the garment to mirror the artist's vision of a spiritual journey.

The design

This artwork is an interpretation of Nantenbō’s famous dual scrolls, "Monks Setting Out" and "Monks Returning." Created around 1922 during the Taisho period, the original composition uses bold, rhythmic brushstrokes (sumi-e) to depict a procession of Zen monks. By placing the "setting out" imagery on the back and the "returning" imagery on the front, the shirt transforms the static scrolls into a dynamic narrative, literally following the monks as they move through space.

The composition is rooted in the Zen concept of mindfulness and the cyclical nature of life. The design maintains the original’s spaciousness and calligraphic flow while reducing the original work to its core component, the procession of monks itself. We have added our subtle red Kokin Denju seal on the backprint, in the exact location and size of the original seal.

The artist

Nakahara Nantenbō (1839-1925) was one of the most influential Zen masters and painters of modern Japan. A prolific artist who took up the brush later in life, he used painting as a form of "visual dharma" to express the raw vitality of Zen practice. His work is celebrated globally for its bold spontaneity and lacks the rigid formality of academic art, making his legacy perfectly suited for modern, everyday expression.

Why you'll love it

  • The double-sided print offers an authentic but modern, 360-degree representation of Nantenbō’s dual-scroll narrative.
  • The minimalist black-and-white aesthetic makes it a versatile staple that pairs easily with any casual or elevated outfit.
  • Its breathable, heavy weight cotton fabric and relaxed fit make it the ideal choice for creative workspaces, gallery visits, or mindful daily routines.
  • This shirt serves as a thoughtful and unique gift for art historians, Zen practitioners, or anyone with an eye for Japanese culture.

How to care

In Japanese tradition, from the tea ceremony to martial arts, there exists a profound respect for the objects we carry and use. If you would like to provide good care for your new shirt, we suggest the following guidelines:

  • Wash your garments inside-out to protect the print.
  • Wash with similar colors to prevent discoloration.
  • Use a mild detergent.
  • Avoid the tumble-dryer – let it dry in the air.

Japanese Zen teaches us the impernanence (mujō) of all things. Your new shirt won't last forever. But if you care for it, it will thank you by aging gracefully.
