Our 'Portrait of Bodhidharma' Zen Art T-Shirt brings authentic 18th-century Japanese brushwork into modern everyday wear. Featuring powerful calligraphy and the iconic likeness of Daruma by Zen master Hakuin Ekaku, this shirt brings a bit of depth to your everyday wear.
The design
The striking print showcases Hakuin Ekaku’s famed half-length portrait of Bodhidharma (Daruma), the 6th-century Indian monk who founded Zen Buddhism in China. Sweeping, intense ink strokes capture Daruma’s focused gaze, framed naturally by Hakuin’s handwritten hiragana inscription: “Dō mitemo...” (どう見ても), translating to “No matter how you look at it...”
Rather than offering a rigid dogma, the phrase acts as an open-ended Zen riddle (kōan), prompting the viewer to look inward and recognize their own inherent enlightened nature in every moment.
To illustrate the format of the original historical hanging scroll, the artwork is anchored in a crisp black border. Our red Kokin Denju seal is placed in approximation of one of the original hankō of Hakuin. The result is a balanced composition that respects authentic Edo-period ink painting while creating a bold visual statement with contemporary style.
The artist
Hakuin Ekaku (1686-1769) was one of the most influential Japanese Zen masters of the Edo period, renowned for revitalizing the Rinzai Zen tradition through art, writing, and teaching. A self-taught and extraordinarily prolific painter, Hakuin used dynamic brushwork and subtle humor to make deep spiritual insights accessible to ordinary people. Today, his expressive calligraphic paintings are celebrated worldwide as masterpieces of Zen art.

How to care
How to care
In Japanese tradition, from the tea ceremony to martial arts, there exists a profound respect for the objects we carry and use. If you would like to provide good care for your new shirt, we suggest the following guidelines:
- Wash your garments inside-out to protect the print.
- Wash with similar colors to prevent discoloration.
- Use a mild detergent.
- Avoid the tumble-dryer – let it dry in the air.
Japanese Zen teaches us the impernanence (mujō) of all things. Your new shirt won't last forever. But if you care for it, it will thank you by aging gracefully.
