Embrace the profound philosophy of Edo-period Japan with this premium cotton t-shirt featuring authentic Zen brushwork. Designed for minimalist art lovers and practitioners of mindfulness, this comfortable garment bridges historical East Asian philosophy and modern everyday style.
The design
The calligraphy on this shirt displays the classical phrase Ichimo sokonau ni atawazu, brushed in a bold, unpretentious style. Originating in Classical Chinese syntax, the phrase literally translates to "Not even a single hair can be damaged or lost."
In Zen philosophy, "a single hair" serves as a metaphor for the smallest, most infinitesimal detail. The artwork reflects the absolute integrity of true nature: Reality is completely whole, pristine, and unified, meaning nothing can be added or taken away without harming the cosmic whole. On a practical level, this teaching represents two core pillars of Eastern thought: Non-violence and uncompromising mindfulness. It acts as a reminder that every living entity – down to a single strand of life – possesses sacred value, while encouraging complete presence of mind in daily actions.
The composition relies on heavy, resolute brushstrokes that leave no room for hesitation, physically mirroring the unshakeable discipline of Zen training. The "hair" takes up a focal point of the composition, with heavy use of "flying white". We balance this deeply impressive calligraphy with our red Kokin Denju seal.
The artist
The artwork was created by Jiun Onkō (1718-1804), a distinguished Edo-period Shingon monk, scholar, and master calligrapher.

How to care
How to care
In Japanese tradition, from the tea ceremony to martial arts, there exists a profound respect for the objects we carry and use. If you would like to provide good care for your new shirt, we suggest the following guidelines:
- Wash your garments inside-out to protect the print.
- Wash with similar colors to prevent discoloration.
- Use a mild detergent.
- Avoid the tumble-dryer – let it dry in the air.
Japanese Zen teaches us the impernanence (mujō) of all things. Your new shirt won't last forever. But if you care for it, it will thank you by aging gracefully.
