The design

The artwork centers on Nantembō’s signature theme: The staff (bō) rendered in sweeping brushwork. The composition is tall and vertical in the original scroll, which we’ve carefully adapted for the shirt so the line weight, brush pooling, and dry-brush energy read clearly at a glance.

Alongside the staff runs a terse challenge from the Zen hall – “If you answer, you get the staff; if you do not answer, you get the staff”. A reminder of the more physical and direct aspects of Zen training, where getting hit with a staff is not an uncommon occurrence (which can help relieve muscle tension and is not meant to punish, but to help focus). The result is a striking (no pun intended), minimalist graphic that carries the cadence of real ink and the spirit of the dōjō.

The artist

Nakahara Nantembō (1839-1925) was a leading Rinzai Zen monk and an influential calligrapher of the Meiji and Taishō eras. His Dharma name “Nantembō” refers to the teaching staff he famously carved from nanten wood – a tool and symbol he used to cut through hesitation in training. His zenga is known for its large scale, vigorous strokes, and uncompromising directness; this piece distills that energy into a single, commanding motif.
