Muchaku - T-Shirt

This t-shirt features the striking aspect of the Statue of Muchaku, a masterpiece of 13th-century Japanese sculpture. The design

The artwork depicts the head and shoulders of Muchaku (Asanga), a seminal 4th-century Indian Buddhist philosopher, as interpreted by the legendary sculptor Unkei in 1212. Though the subject was historically Indian, Unkei took the radical step of rendering the figure with distinct Japanese features and startling realism. This portrait is part of a pair of National Treasures housed at Kofukuji Temple in Nara, renowned for "Gyokugan" (inlaid crystal eyes) that give the figure an eerie, lifelike presence. Our design preserves the duality of Unkei’s original vision – a figure that feels intimately human yet spiritually monumental.

The composition is grounded by a rich, deep red circular background, a color traditionally associated with protection and vitality in Japanese culture. This creates a bold contrast that highlights the intricate weathered textures and contemplative expression of the wooden sculpture, making the ancient craftsmanship feel immediate and relevant.

The artist

Unkei (ca. 1148-1223) was the preeminent figure of the Kei school and is widely considered the most important sculptor in the history of Japanese art.
