This striking ukiyo-e woodblock print by Kuniyoshi Utagawa depicts Mongaku, a former samurai turned monk, enduring the icy waters of the Nachi waterfall as penance for accidentally killing a friend’s wife. According to legend, he lost consciousness during this ascetic ritual but was saved by Buddhist deities.
The design
This piece showcases Mongaku at the moment of intense ascetic practice beneath the Nachi Falls. Strong vertical lines mimic the plunge of water with Mongaku standing right in the middle in a steadfast posture, gritting his teeth in the cold water. Buddhist deities watch over him from the top right.
We’ve added a vintage effect reminiscent of water splashes to the print.

How to care
How to care
In Japanese tradition, from the tea ceremony to martial arts, there exists a profound respect for the objects we carry and use. If you would like to provide good care for your new shirt, we suggest the following guidelines:
- Wash your garments inside-out to protect the print.
- Wash with similar colors to prevent discoloration.
- Use a mild detergent.
- Avoid the tumble-dryer – let it dry in the air.
Japanese Zen teaches us the impernanence (mujō) of all things. Your new shirt won't last forever. But if you care for it, it will thank you by aging gracefully.
