This striking ukiyo-e woodblock print by Kuniyoshi Utagawa (1797-1861) depicts Mongaku, a former samurai turned monk, enduring the icy waters of the Nachi waterfall as penance for accidentally killing a friend’s wife. According to legend, he lost consciousness during this ascetic ritual but was saved by Buddhist deities.
We’ve added a vintage effect reminiscent of water splashes to the print.
