Mongaku 文覚 - T-Shirt

A soft, comfortable cotton tee featuring a reproduction of a dramatic ukiyo-e scene: The monk Mongaku Shōnin standing in winter austerities beneath Nachi Falls. This design carries a quiet intensity – a reminder of repentance, resolve, and starting again – packaged in a modern layout with a honeycomb structure.

The design

Mongaku Shōnin – formerly Endō Morito – prays under the freezing cascade at Nachi no Taki as penance after the tragic death of Kesa Gozen. In Japanese legend, Morito intends to kill his rival Watanabe Wataru but unknowingly kills Kesa, who has taken her husband’s place to preserve her honor. The print captures the disciplined stillness of shugyō (ascetic practice): Cold water thundering down, robes clinging to the body, and a lone figure reciting invocations to Fudō Myōō, the immovable protector. It’s an emblem of endurance and ethical renewal. 

We have packaged the centuries-old woodblock print into a modern honeycomb structure layout. The name Mongaku is added in Japanese characters (文覚).

The artist

Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1865), also known as Utagawa Toyokuni III, was one of the most prolific ukiyo-e masters of the Edo period. Trained in the Utagawa school, he became the leading designer of actor portraits and beauties, while also producing vivid interpretations of literary and historical subjects.
