Take a bit of ancient wisdom into your every day with this Ukiyo-e T-shirt featuring a masterpiece by Utagawa Kuniyoshi.

The design

Created around 1837, this striking composition depicts a giant lobster surfacing from a turbulent sea and a slightly startled a phoenix perched upon its antenna. The artwork serves as a visual representation of a Zen parable regarding the nature of perception – the phoenix, a celestial being, mistakes the lobster's antenna for a tree branch, mirroring the human tendency to misinterpret the metaphysical realm.

Kuniyoshi expertly utilizes the ukiyo-e style to contrast the organic, rounded forms of the swelling waves with the sharp, angular white crests of the foam. This dynamic background heightens the sense of drama and movement, turning a moment of "mistaken identity" into a profound meditation on the complexities of reality and the limitations of our own senses.

The artist

Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861) was one of the final great masters of the Japanese woodblock print. Born in Edo as the son of a silk dyer, he brought a unique vitality and imagination to the medium. While his contemporaries focused on serene landscapes, Kuniyoshi became legendary for his warrior prints (musha-e) and his fascination with the fantastical. His work was so influential and visually commanding that he was frequently sought after for tattoo designs, a testament to the enduring, edgy appeal of his graphic style.

How to care

In Japanese tradition, from the tea ceremony to martial arts, there exists a profound respect for the objects we carry and use. If you would like to provide good care for your new shirt, we suggest the following guidelines:

  • Wash your garments inside-out to protect the print.
  • Wash with similar colors to prevent discoloration.
  • Use a mild detergent.
  • Avoid the tumble-dryer – let it dry in the air.

Japanese Zen teaches us the impernanence (mujō) of all things. Your new shirt won't last forever. But if you care for it, it will thank you by aging gracefully.
