Kyōsai's Shōki - T-Shirt

The design

Shōki (Zhong Kui in Chinese) is the legendary demon-queller – a protector figure believed to ward off illness and misfortune. Kyōsai depicts Shōki in motion, sword held up high, with two scrambling oni, one in white and one in red.

The artist

Kawanabe Kyōsai (1831-1889) was a prolific painter, printmaker, and caricaturist who bridged the late Edo and early Meiji periods. Trained in the Kano tradition yet famously independent, he combined classical technique with sharp observation and satire. Kyōsai’s dynamic line, interest in the supernatural, and quick, expressive ink work made him a standout voice of his time – and a perennial favorite for subjects like Shōki, tengu, and other folkloric figures.
