This t-shirt features 'Kirifuri Waterfall at Kurokami Mountain in Shimotsuke', a woodblock print Katsushika Hokusai created around 1832 for his series 'A Tour of Waterfalls in Various Provinces' (Shokoku taki meguri). The print demonstrates the technical control Hokusai developed in his seventies, when he had spent five decades refining his approach to depicting water in motion.
The design
“Kirifuri” means “Falling Mist.” Rather than rendering the cascade naturalistically, Hokusai stylized the water into vertical streams – bold fingers of Prussian blue and white that grip the cliff face. This approach gives the waterfall structural presence; the water reads as both liquid and geometric form.
At the base, three small figures look upward. The scale contrast is deliberate: in Shinto and Buddhist practice, waterfalls were considered dwelling places for kami (spirits), and pilgrims traveled to these sites for purification rituals. The tiny human figures anchor the composition’s spiritual dimension without overstating it.
The artist‘s name is placed at the bottom of the shirt.
The artist
Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) produced an estimated 30,000 works across his lifetime. He called himself “old man mad about drawing” and continued working until his death at 88. His systematic study of water’s movement and structure – evident in both The Great Wave off Kanagawa and this waterfall series – influenced Western artists including Van Gogh and Monet when Japanese prints reached Europe in the 1870s.

How to care
How to care
In Japanese tradition, from the tea ceremony to martial arts, there exists a profound respect for the objects we carry and use. If you would like to provide good care for your new shirt, we suggest the following guidelines:
- Wash your garments inside-out to protect the print.
- Wash with similar colors to prevent discoloration.
- Use a mild detergent.
- Avoid the tumble-dryer – let it dry in the air.
Japanese Zen teaches us the impernanence (mujō) of all things. Your new shirt won't last forever. But if you care for it, it will thank you by aging gracefully.
