The design

The artwork on this shirt is sourced from an authentic Katagami – a hand-carved stencil made from multiple layers of mulberry paper (washi). In the late 1800s, these stencils were essential tools for stencil dyeing, used to apply intricate patterns onto silk and cotton for kimonos, banners, and interior screens. The durability and water-resistance of the stencil allowed for the incredibly fine, precise lines visible in the scales and flowing forms of these two dragons. This particular Katagami is likely dated between 1895-1898.

In Japanese mythology, dragons are benevolent deities associated with wisdom, protection, and strength. Unlike their fire-breathing Western counterparts, these serpentine creatures represent the balance of the natural world and were often depicted in pairs to symbolize harmony or the duality of cosmic forces. This specific composition captures the transition of the Meiji period, where traditional ukiyo-e influences met a refined, graphic precision that later inspired the global Japonisme movement and influenced artists like Van Gogh and Monet.
