Wear a piece of colorful Japanese martial arts history with this T-shirt featuring the distinctive work of Kawanabe Kyōsai. This shirt transforms a beautiful and witty 19th-century ukiyo-e woodblock print into wearable art.

The design

This artwork is drawn from the series Kyōsai rakuga, or "Kyōsai’s Scribbles" a collection known for its satirical take on the social mores and events of the late Edo and early Meiji periods. The central figure is the legendary swordsman Sakakibara Kenkichi, widely considered the father of modern Kendo. The composition depicts Kenkichi travelling through a rugged mountain landscape, surrounded by wild beasts and a skeleton.

The image references a pivotal moment in Japanese history; following the 1876 decree abolishing the public wearing of swords, Kenkichi famously invented the yamatozue (a wooden sword) and the ganko ogi (a solid wooden fan) to preserve the samurai spirit without violating the law. This design captures that spirit of resilience and adaptation: If you look closely you can see the famous swordsman deftly fending off the surrounding creatures‘ attacks with a folded fan.

The artist

Kawanabe Kyōsai (1831-1889) was one of the last virtuosos of traditional Japanese painting and a bridge between the Edo and Meiji eras. Often called the "Demon of Painting," he was celebrated for his speed, skill, and rebellious spirit. He is also known to have liked a good drink. Although he was trained in the orthodox Kano school, Kyosai is best remembered for his caricature and satirical works that frequently poked fun at the changing political landscape of 19th-century Japan.

Why you'll love it

  • The print features high-fidelity details that respect the original brushwork and texture of the 19th-century woodblock source.
  • Kaibara Kenkichi is a interesting historical figure to dive deeper into and discover.
  • The colorful print looks striking and pairs well with chinos and an unbuttoned overshirt.
  • An ideal present for martial arts practitioners, historians, or anyone with a deep appreciation for Japanese folklore. And of course for fans of Kyōsai's artistic œvre.
