This calligraphy by Jiun Onkō revisits a story that is said to have happened in the year 520. Daruma meets Emperor Wu and is asked various questions about Buddhism – but his answers fail to satisfy the Emperor. Annoyed, the emperor finally asks him "Who are you?" to which the Daruma answers "I do not know". Thrown out of the court, the Daruma is believed to have taken refuge in a cave, where he sat in meditation for nine years.

The design

The artist

Jiun Onkō (1718-1804) was a Japanese Buddhist monk, scholar, and master calligrapher of the Edo period. Renowned for uncompromising, powerful strokes and spiritually charged lettering, Jiun’s work bridges scholarship and practice – making this design both visually compelling and philosophically alive.
