The design

The artwork depicts Hotei (the "Laughing Buddha") enveloped within his large jute sack, a composition that emphasizes his itinerant nature and his contentment with few possessions. Originally painted in 1800 as an ink-on-paper hanging scroll. In Zen tradition, Hotei is celebrated as an incarnation of Maitreya, symbolizing the joy and abundance found in a life of simplicity and detachment.

By featuring Hotei within his sack, the artwork serves as a visual metaphor for the treasure of inner peace. During the Edo period, Hotei became one of Japan's Seven Lucky Gods, evolving from a Tang-dynasty monk into a universal symbol of wealth, prosperity, and a cheery nature. The artist

Kōgan Gengei (1748-1821) was a distinguished Japanese Zen priest and painter belonging to the influential lineage of Hakuin Ekaku.
