The Japanese characters (or kanji) on this shirt mean "hell", and have been calligraphed with an almost explosive determination and skill some time in the mid-17th century.
There are many ways to look at this stunning piece of calligraphy. One would be to simply take in the beauty and raw power of the brushwork, with its ink splatters and 'flying white'. Another would be to interpret the concept of "hell" through the lens of Buddhism, hinting for example at how, according to Buddhist teaching, our actions in this life may impact the next life we are born into. You may even contemplate whether "hell" is an external place or rather a state of mind.
This calligraphy is attributed to Seigan Sōi (1588-1661), a significant Japanese Zen Buddhist monk, painter, and poet. He is particularly recognized for his role as the 170th abbot of Daitokuji in Kyoto, a major Zen monastic complex, and was well-known for his expressive and skillful brushwork. "Hell" amongst his most famous artworks.
