The design

The calligraphy rendered here is said to refer to the concept of shinnyo, which could be translated into "suchness" or "thussness" – someone's or something's essential nautre.

Created in the late 18th century, the original artwork employs the striking technique known as hihaku (flying white) – a dry-brush effect where ink breaks across the paper as the brush speeds through the movement. This spontaneous, physical execution gives the characters a distinct dynamic energy, turning a timeless philosophical concept into a powerful visual statement.

The artist

The work is attributed to Jiun Onkō (1718–1804), also known as Jiun Sonja, an Edo-period monk, scholar, and legendary calligrapher. Renowned for his rigorous discipline, deep engagement across Shingon and Zen traditions, and mastery of Sanskrit, Jiun developed a renowned style characterized by thick, vigorous brushwork that scholars praise for its rare combination of raw power, warmth, and quiet refinement.
