The design

The artist
This design is based on a beautiful ensō by Tengan Sogyo (1667-1731), a monk of the Sōtō school of Zen Buddhism. Working in the Edo period, Tengan’s calligraphy reflects core Zen values – simplicity, immediacy, and direct expression through the brush. His ensō captures the mindfulness of a single, unbroken movement.
