The design

The artist 

Takuan Sōhō (1573-1645) was a Rinzai Zen monk and influential teacher whose letters and essays – often linked to “The Unfettered Mind” – bridged Zen practice and martial arts. He advised notable swordsmen and is popularly credited with the namesake takuan pickled daikon. His calligraphy is valued for directness, economy of stroke, and spiritual clarity rather than ornament.
