Wear raw Muromachi-period Zen spirit with the Do No Evil - T-Shirt, featuring an extraordinary 15th-century calligraphic work by the legendary Rinzai Zen master Ikkyū Sōjun. Trading the delicate precision of earlier courtly styles for fearless, kinetic energy, this minimalist Japanese calligraphy shirt speaks to practitioners of Zen, martial artists, and lovers of authentic historical shodō.
The design
Written in two vertical columns of vigorous, fast-moving brushwork, the kanji read "Do no evil; practice all that is good" – a foundational Buddhist precept. Rather than aiming for decorative symmetry, Ikkyū's brush flies across the surface with visible speed and dry-brush kasure ("flying white") textures, expressing sheer power of spirit over mere aesthetics. Anchored in the lower left by our red Kokin Denju seal, this piece serves as a bold daily compass for mindful action.
The artist
Ikkyū Sōjun (1394–1481) was an eccentric, iconoclastic Japanese Rinzai Zen monk, poet, and former abbot of Daitoku-ji in Kyoto, revered for rejecting religious hypocrisy in favor of fierce authenticity and unbridled spiritual freedom.

How to care
How to care
In Japanese tradition, from the tea ceremony to martial arts, there exists a profound respect for the objects we carry and use. If you would like to provide good care for your new shirt, we suggest the following guidelines:
- Wash your garments inside-out to protect the print.
- Wash with similar colors to prevent discoloration.
- Use a mild detergent.
- Avoid the tumble-dryer – let it dry in the air.
Japanese Zen teaches us the impernanence (mujō) of all things. Your new shirt won't last forever. But if you care for it, it will thank you by aging gracefully.
