This ukiyo-e shirt features a striking reproduction of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi’s 1865 woodblock print, "Crossing the Tenryū River at Mitsuke", reimagined with a bold black frame, the design balances traditional Japanese ukiyo-e aesthetics with a clean, modern edge suitable for daily wear.

The design

This artwork depicts Shogun Iemochi crossing the swift currents of the Tenryū River, the 28th station of the historic Tōkaidō road. Because the Tokugawa shogunate prohibited bridges over major rivers for defensive reasons, travelers were forced to rely on ferry boats. In this composition, the Shogun stands prominently at the bow, adorned in the red and white cloak of his clan and holding a massive uma-jirushi (commander's standard). The scene is defined by the atmospheric mist of the morning, where the dark silhouettes of accompanying boats and distant mountains create a sense of depth and transit.

By adding a contemporary black frame to the original 1865 print, the artwork is anchored visually on the fabric, ensuring the intricate lines of the ukiyo-e style remain sharp and impactful against the shirt’s texture.

The artist

Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-1892) is widely recognized as the last great master of the traditional ukiyo-e woodblock print. Working during a time of rapid modernization in Japan, his style bridged the gap between old-world craftsmanship and new Western influences.

Why you'll love it

  • Wear a piece of 19th-century Japanese history, sourced from Yoshitoshi’s acclaimed series documenting the Tōkaidō road.
  • The travel/transit-focused theme of this artwork make it a subtle statement piece for all who love traveling.
  • An excellent choice not just for yourself but for all enthusiasts of Japanese culture or ukiyo-e collectors looking for a wearable way to display their passion.

How to care

In Japanese tradition, from the tea ceremony to martial arts, there exists a profound respect for the objects we carry and use. If you would like to provide good care for your new shirt, we suggest the following guidelines:

  • Wash your garments inside-out to protect the print.
  • Wash with similar colors to prevent discoloration.
  • Use a mild detergent.
  • Avoid the tumble-dryer – let it dry in the air.

Japanese Zen teaches us the impernanence (mujō) of all things. Your new shirt won't last forever. But if you care for it, it will thank you by aging gracefully.
