Confused Frog - T-Shirt

Taken straight from a painting by Itō Jakuchū, this shirt featuring an Edo-period rendition of a frog is perfect for casual outfits, gifting, and anyone who smiles at the delightfully bewildered expression of this authentic Japanese artwork.

The design

A single frog, rendered with bold, economical brushstrokes, is actually part of a 10+ meters long (!) scroll called "Compendium of Vegetables and Insects" which features many plants as well as insects and small critters. The frog appears to towards the end of the scroll, gazing across a little pond with its delightfully bewildered expression. Itō Jakuchū's rendition of the frog speaks of a sense of compassionate humor, and almost makes you forget that this piece of art is hundreds of years old.

The artist

Itō Jakuchū (1716-1800) was a Japanese painter of the mid-Edo period, celebrated for his hyper-realistic and vivid depictions of the natural world.
