The design

The shirt features the phrase 暫時不在如同死人, read in Japanese as zanji fuza i ni shitagau ga gotoku shinin no gotoshi – “For a time, be as though dead.” In Zen practice this is a clear instruction: For a period of meditation or spiritual training, let go completely of worldly concerns, self-image, and attachment to thoughts and sensations.

To be “as if dead” here does not mean gloomy or morbid – it means being free of ego, empty of self, and fully present.

The composition follows traditional Zen calligraphy: Bold, confident and masterful brushstrokes with natural variation, and open negative space that lets the phrase breathe. We add our subtle Kokin Denju seal to balance the layout and gently anchor the artwork without distracting from Hakuin’s words.
