The design

“For a time, be as though dead.” (暫時不在如同死人) 

In Zen practice this is a clear instruction: For a period of meditation or spiritual training, let go completely of worldly concerns, self-image, and attachment to thoughts and sensations.

To be “as if dead” here is not about being gloomy or morbid – it means being free of ego, empty of self, and fully present.

The composition follows traditional Zen calligraphy: Bold, confident and masterful brushstrokes with natural variation, and open negative space that lets the phrase breathe. We add our subtle Kokin Denju seal to balance the layout and gently anchor the artwork without distracting from Hakuin’s words. The artist

Hakuin Ekaku (1686-1769) is one of the most important figures in Rinzai Zen. A renowned teacher, he revitalised Zen training and left behind a rich body of calligraphy and paintings that combine spiritual clarity with humour and directness.
