The tsuba is the sword guard of a Japanese sword, positioned between the blade and the grip to protect the swordsman’s fingers. This shirt features the shapes of three exquisitely crafted tsuba, taken from actual sword guards.
The design
On the far left, an 18th-century design appears to depict mushrooms – an unusual and evocative motif. The central piece, also from the 18th century, showcases two butterflies: One with transparent wings, the other solid, capturing a delicate balance of contrast and form. The tsuba on the right, dating from the Edo period (ca. 1615-1868), displays a refined shippō pattern of interlocking circles, symbolizing harmony and good fortune.
