This Japanese art t-shirt brings a touch of irreverent Edo-period humor to your daily rotation. Featuring a high-quality reproduction of a classic woodblock print, this tee combines historical Japanese folklore with the eccentric wit a very special artist of the Edo-period: Kawanabe Kyōsai.

The design

The artwork displayed on this shirt belongs to the series One Hundred Pictures by Kyōsai (kyōsai hyakuzu). It depicts a comical scene involving a Kappa – a legendary Japanese water-imp – expelling gas with such supernatural force that it sends two fishermen flying through the air.

Beyond the visual comedy, the image references a pun. The Japanese phrase kappa no he (河童の屁), literally translating to "a water-imp’s fart," is an idiom meaning "good for nothing" or something trivial.

The artist

Kawanabe Kyōsai (1831-1889) was one of the most distinct voices in Japanese art history, celebrated for his bridge between traditional painting and modern caricature. Originally trained in the rigorous Kanō school and apprenticed under the ukiyo-e master Utagawa Kuniyoshi, Kyōsai eventually earned the nickname "The Painting Demon" for his intense energy and skill. Known for his heavy drinking and rebellious attitude toward authority, he produced bold, energetic works that resonated with the common people of the Edo period – a legacy of mischief that remains influential in Japanese pop culture today.

Why you’ll love it

  • The print features a faithful reproduction of Kyōsai’s original woodblock caricatures, preserving the bold lines and dynamic composition of the 19th-century original. We have added a frame to better balance the image on a t-shirt.
  • The humorous backstory and the literal visualization of the "Kappa no he" idiom make this shirt an immediate ice-breaker at social gatherings.
  • This is an unusual gift for folklore enthusiasts, students of Japanese history, or anyone with an appreciation for eccentric, offbeat art.

How to care

In Japanese tradition, from the tea ceremony to martial arts, there exists a profound respect for the objects we carry and use. If you would like to provide good care for your new shirt, we suggest the following guidelines:

  • Wash your garments inside-out to protect the print.
  • Wash with similar colors to prevent discoloration.
  • Use a mild detergent.
  • Avoid the tumble-dryer – let it dry in the air.

Japanese Zen teaches us the impernanence (mujō) of all things. Your new shirt won't last forever. But if you care for it, it will thank you by aging gracefully.
