The design

The artist

Jiun Onkō (1718-1804) was a prominent figure in the Edo period, celebrated for his eclectic approach to religious training and his dynamic artistic style. Originally a monk of the Shingon sect, he grew frustrated with traditional commentaries and immersed himself in the practice of Sōtō Zen Buddhism and meditation.

A true polymath, Jiun was also a renowned Sanskrit scholar and a student of Confucianism and Shinto. His calligraphy is revered for moving away from technical perfectionism to focus on spiritual expression, resulting in works that are bold, energetic, and deeply personal.
