This playful print by Kawanabe Kyōsai (1831-1889) shows a group of tengu – mischievous mountain spirits or yōkai – throwing a lively feast in a pine tree, completely ignoring the shogun's procession passing below. Some cook, some serve sake, and others celebrate with giant cups, while only one tengu even glances at the parade.
A great motive for lovers of the Japanese yōkai, and all who, let's say, can enjoy a good laugh at the government.
